Si aggrava ulteriormente il bilancio delle vittime a Hualien, località turistica nel nord-est di Taiwan colpita da un violento terremoto tra martedì e mercoledì: sono finora 9 le vittime e oltre 60 i dispersi.

Il terremoto magnitudo 6.4 ha provocato il collasso di quattro edifici e il ferimento di 240 persone, secondo l’ultimo bilancio fornito dalle autorità. Molti dei dispersi sarebbero intrappolati sotto le rovine degli edifici collassati o all’interno di altre strutture semisprofondate a causa del sisma.

L’epicentro del terremoto è stato individuato 22 km a nordest della costa. Si temono possibili forti repliche magnitudo 5 nei prossimi giorni.

Il sisma ha divelto strade, privato circa 40 mila abitazioni dell’acqua corrente e 1.900 della corrente elettrica.

Taiwan si trova sul punto di contatto tra due placche tettoniche. Oltre 100 persone sono morte a causa di un evento che ha colpito il sud dell’isola nel 2016, mentre nel 1999 un disastro analogo ha provocato oltre 2 mila vittime.
