di Andrea Muscat – A Malta il mese di gennaio è stato caldo e secco: a Gharb sono caduti appena 49,8mm di pioggia, circa il 50% della media che è di quasi 90mm. Il giorno più piovoso è stato il 18 quando sono caduti 10,8mm di pioggia nel corso di diversi rovesci di pioggia e grandine per tutta la prima metà della giornata. Durante questo mese ci sono stati 15 giorni di pioggia cui 6 con temporali e 5 con grandine.
Con una temperatura media massima di +15.8°C, gennaio è stato 0.9°C più caldo rispetto al valore medio climatico nelle medie, mentre la media delle temperature minime è stata di +10,6°C, più calda di appena +0,2°C rispetto alla media. La temperatura più bassa è stata di +7,0°C registrata giorno 8 durante una tempesta di grandine, la massima più alta è stata di +18,9°C giorno 14. L’umidità media mensile è stata del 73,8%, leggermente inferiore rispetto al valore previsto in questo periodo dell’anno.
La velocità media del vento a Gharb è stata di 14.4 km/h che è molto superiore al valore climatico. La direzione più frequente è stata Ovest. La raffica più forte è stata di 62,9 km/h (Forza 8) durante un forte temporale giorno 15.
La media mensile della pressione al livello del mare è stata di 1014.8hPa, con un picco massimo di 1029.0hPa misurato giorno 4 nel corso di un anticiclone, che è stato responsabile di un periodo piuttosto secco; la più bassa è stata di 997.9hPa che si è verificato giorno 27 nel corso di un intenso sistema di bassa pressione che ha generato una tempesta di vento di libeccio molto intensa, con alcuni temporali nella serata a Malta.
L’evento clou di questo mese è stata senza dubbio la forte grandinata che si è verificata il 15 e ha colpito soprattutto la regione centrale di Malta, con grandine di grosse dimensioni che ha provocato molti danni.
A Drier and Warmer January
Rainfall last month was lower than the norm for the month. The amount of rain at Gharb accumulated to a monthly total of only 49.8 mm which is lower than average by almost half with a difference of 40 mm. The wettest day was the 18th when 10.8 mm of rain fell during several rain / hail showers throughout the first half of the day. During this month there were 15 rainfall days of which 6 were thundery and 5 were with hail.
With a mean air temperature of 15.8°C, January was 0.9°C warmer than the climate value. Nights at 10.6°C were only 0.2°C warmer than the average but highs at 15.8°C were considerably higher with a difference of 1.6°C. The lowest minimum temperature last month was 7.0°C, recorded on the 18th during a hail storm. The highest temperature during January was recorded on the 14st at 18.9°C. The monthly mean humidity of 73.8% was slightly below the expected value at this time of year.
The average wind speed at Gharb last month was at 14.4 km/h which is much higher than the climate value. The most frequent direction was the West. The strongest of 62.9 km/h (Force 8) was measured during a severe thunderstorm on the 15th.
The mean monthly sea-level pressure was 1014.8hPa, with the highest of 1029.0hPa occurring on the 4th during an anticyclone which was responsible for a rather dry period in January and the lowest of 997.9hPa occurring on the 27th during an intense low pressure system which generated a gale to severe gale SW wind with some evening thunderstorms in Malta.
This month’s highlight was without any doubt the severe hail storm which occurred on the 15th and mainly hit the central region of Malta with large hail that contributed to lots of damage to vehicle and outdoor furniture.
